UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp named WUSTL provost, to succeed Macias

Holden Thorp, PhD, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and a highly respected research scientist and academic leader, will become WUSTL  provost  July 1, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. He will succeed Edward S. Macias, PhD, who has served as chief academic officer for the past 25 years.

Emerging cancer drugs may drive bone tumors

Cancer drugs should kill tumors, not encourage their spread. But new evidence suggests that an otherwise promising class of drugs actually may increase the risk of tumors spreading to bone, according to School of Medicine researchers.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet at Edison Feb. 22-23

Alonzo King cuts a unique figure in the contemporary dance world — an African-American choreographer creating original works within the traditions and structures of classical ballet. On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, King and his touring company, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, will present two shows as part of the Edison Ovations Series.

Acclaimed pianist/composer on campus Thursday

In 2011, acclaimed pianist and composer Amina Figarova left Europe for the United States. The result is Twelve, a suite of new songs that Figarova wrote shortly after the move. On Thursday, Feb. 21, Figarova will visit WUSTL’s Jazz at Holmes Series as part of a 14-city tour in support of Twelve, her 12th full-length album.

Observing Black History Month

For nearly two decades, Black Anthology has been a strong tradition at WUSTL during Black History Month. Students write and produce a politically conscious and artistically creative performance highlighting issues affecting the African-American community. This year’s production took place earlier this month.

Arbor Day Foundation honors WUSTL for third straight year 

WUSTL is a Tree Campus USA for the third year in a row, the Arbor Day Foundation recently announced. Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals.
